Every year, over 4,000 volunteers help us provide hope, transformation and total life recovery for homeless people in our community. These volunteers make it possible for us to do what we do: break the generational cycle of homelessness and addiction. Each year, we see more and more people that have desperate needs. That means we need your help more than ever!
Volunteers are integral to every aspect of Portland Rescue Mission’s ministry; serving meals is only a small part of what we do. There are two main aspects to our ministry, and volunteers are a huge part of both:
- Outreach – provides breakfast and dinner daily to the public, access to 24-hour bathrooms, clothing and hygiene items on an as-needed basis, men’s overnight shelter, women’s day room, etc.
- New Life Ministry – a 12 to 18-month addiction recovery program for both men and women that include a holistic approach to each person’s situation. This includes an individualized education plan, spiritual formation classes, addiction recovery classes, life skills classes (parenting, cooking, applying for a job, etc.),and assistance remedying legal issues like bankruptcy, traffic fines, or child custody cases.
Our desire is to match a person’s talents, passions, interests, skills and availability with a complementary position throughout our organization. In order to be as effective as possible, we also ask that volunteers commit to serving for at least one year. By partnering with us, you can be a vital part of transforming lives and can also offer hope and relief to those who are without hope and are often overlooked.
Whatever your talents, we have a place for you!
We truly see volunteers as partners doing ministry with us, not for us. The fellowship among volunteers, staff, and those we serve has a life-changing impact on all of us, and we encourage you to pray about how you can serve homeless men, women and children in your community this year!
