Shepherd's Door

Out of the Darkness – Kathy’s Story of Hope

Kathy isn’t a middle-aged man. She’s never slept on the streets of downtown Portland, and she’s never held a cardboard sign on a street corner. When you hear the words “homeless person,” you probably would never imagine someone like Kathy.

But just a year ago, Kathy was indeed homeless. Her heroin addiction had robbed her of money and good decision-making skills. The only thing that kept her and her daughters off the streets was a gracious friend with extra space in the basement.

Kathy and her daughters were just a handful of the thousands of “unseen homeless” in Portland. They were the homeless women and children that are doing everything possible to stay off the streets – often a deadly place for women. Many don’t realize that women and children are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population.

Today, Kathy lives at Shepherd’s Door, our residential addiction recovery program for women and their children. She is on the road to recovery and is making excellent strides forward.
