Join Portland Rescue Mission’s story, become a monthly supporter

Our dedicated staff and volunteers at Portland Rescue Mission love pouring out their hearts to serve men, women and children in need — 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

A special group of donors, our Circle of Friends, provide vital monthly support to keep our ministries running strong each day.

As a member of our Circle of Friends, you choose the amount of support you want to give each month, and it will be automatically deducted from your bank account or credit card. You will also receive less mail from us and help us save on postage and printing costs. You’ll hear from us just four times a year with a statement of your giving along with our latest Rescue Portland newsletter.

In the safe, healing environment of Shepherd’s Door, women learn to invite God into the wounds of their past and healing the root causes behind their addictions. The process often involves self-discovery through a variety of ways – including through art, thanks to Staff Ministry member Robbin Van Rys.

While not an official part of the recovery program, Robbin created a six-week art therapy class for Shepherd’s Door in hopes of providing yet another outlet for the women to navigate their recovery journeys.

John Dominguez’s ‘Story of Hope’ still strong, 10 years later

Ten years ago, John Dominguez was completely lost. He had just spent 20 years in a deep haze of drug and alcohol addiction, and it had slowly taken everything from him.

“Nothing else mattered to me except for meth, and I did it for like 12 years.”

Today, John’s life has been completely restored. Not only does John host weekly karaoke down at the Burnside Shelter every Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m., he also helps head up a weekly street corner ministry on Monday nights in downtown Portland for an organization called My Brother’s Keeper.

Overcoming addiction and abuse can be emotionally and mentally draining for the women in New Life Ministries.

One way to encourage our women and children and offer space for further healing is to pack everyone up and take them on a retreat! Thanks to the hospitality of 5Rock Ranch, 41 women and children from Shepherd’s Door spent a refreshing week interacting with nature, experiencing God’s love and healing from the past.

While the Shepherd’s Door facility underwent renovation, the women and children enjoyed many important moments. Filled with rain and laughter, hikes and art-projects, prayer and heart-deep conversation, the rustic retreat provided a welcome change of pace.

Family Life Center shows kids affected by addiction ‘unconditional love’

Children aren’t typically who we first imagine when we think about homelessness. The truth is that women and children are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population.

Portland Rescue Mission seeks to embrace not only women in need of healing, but also their children who have also been deeply impacted by domestic violence and drug use.

Two years ago, the Mission started the Family Life Ministry at Shepherd’s Door.

As an integral and developing ministry within Portland Rescue Mission, Family Life Ministry provides a safe and healing place for the children of Shepherd’s Door.

Five ‘miracles’ celebrated from The Harbor, one joyous graduation

From left: Mike, Kelcey, Jon, Bill and Tasson all graduate from The Harbor in April 2015.

Our five most recent graduates from The Harbor.

Under a bright, blue sky and warm sunshine, five men from The Harbor closed one chapter of their lives to start a brand new one filled with real hope and possibilities. Loud and proud, and in front of a packed house at Crossroads Church in northeast Portland, those five “miracles” (as described by Life Skills Manager Chris Jackson) used the time to share about God’s great love in their lives and how God continues to transform them daily.

Surrounded by friends, family, staff and the community, each man was shared a little bit about their story and had a couple of people close to them share how they have seen the men change.
