How You Can Help Serve Vulnerable Neighbors During the COVID-19 Outbreak

As we all struggle to find our bearings during the almost hourly changes of the COVID-19 outbreak Portland Rescue Mission is continuing to serve our vulnerable neighbors who cannot find shelter inside. Our neighbors without a home are already vulnerable to sickness, weather, exhaustion, and malnutrition.

The population we serve also experience high levels of instability, which has just been amplified by COVID-19. Our highest goal is to provide stability for those taking shelter at Portland Rescue Mission. We continue to be a 24/7 365 ministry, bringing life-sustaining services to everyone who enters our door.

This is a very real life-and-death struggle for our often compromised neighbors. Most of the chronically homeless are considered “geriatric” by medical facilities regardless of age. Even before COVID-19, the average lifespan for a person who is chronically homeless in the U.S. is just under 50 years old.

What We are Doing

Thanks to the support of our generous community, Portland Rescue Mission is putting our full effort toward the safety and health of our guests:

  • We have been urgently advocating for our homeless neighbors with the Joint Office of Homeless Services, Oregon Health Department and key political leaders to create additional shelters, especially quarantine shelters for people with COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Despite the challenging environment, our staff and volunteers are taking extensive steps to keep our facilities sanitized and are working tirelessly to improve the safety of our community.
  • We are adapting services to provide safe distances between people as we continue to provide life-saving meals and shelter.
  • We have recently spent thousands of dollars on equipment and supplies to protect the safety and health of our guests, staff, and volunteers.

As you can imagine, the needs will significantly increase as COVID-19 moves through our community.

How You Can Help

For 70 years, Portland Rescue Mission has partnered with our community to offer hope and restoration to men, women, and children in our community struggling with hunger, homelessness, and addiction. Every service comes with this message: “You are valuable. You are loved and have not been forgotten.

You can help in very real and tangible ways to touch lives and show desperate men and women that they have not been forgotten during these tough times.

Pray.

Pray that government officials will find the will to provide urgently needed quarantine facilities and services for our neighbors experiencing homelessness so potentially disastrous outcomes can be averted.

Pray for the safety and healing of the hundreds of men and women that we serve daily. Pray for protection over their health as they are among the most medically vulnerable in our community.

Pray for the safety and health of our staff and volunteers, first responders and frontline medical workers as they serve tirelessly through this very challenging time.

Give.

Give generously to support to provide meals, shelter, and vital care. Portland Rescue Mission receives no government funding, so we are especially dependent on our community for support to provide care 24/7 for our neighbors in great need.

When the unexpected happens, like coronavirus, we must ramp up to make changes that keep everyone healthy and safe. Your donation allows us to be flexible as changes occur and to serve the unprotected in the best possible ways.

Your generous support provides meals, shelter and vital care and covers increased costs of equipment and supplies required to adapt to the unique challenges of delivering services in this crisis.

Thank you for your compassionate partnership! As neighbors helping neighbors we make our community stronger and more resilient.

We will continue to keep you updated as we move forward together bringing shelter, meals, and hope to our neighbors.
