Portland, Ore. - With weather forecasts predicting freezing temperatures and a chance of snow, the Portland Rescue Mission responded to a request from city officials and chose to expand its cold weather emergency shelter services this weekend in order to accommodate 70 additional men.

The cold weather services are usually open through the traditional cold weather months of October through March, but with freezing temperatures and a chance of snow possible the Mission plans on providing those services this weekend. This will allow the Mission to accommodate 120 men, in addition to 100 men, women, and children who are involved in the Mission's recovery programs.

As weather forecasts began to predict a cold and wet weekend the City of Portland's Homeless Coordinator, Liora Berry, asked Portland Rescue Mission if they would consider an emergency re-opening of their cold weather facilities. J.R. Baker, the Director of Men's Ministry at the Burnside Shelter, was able to accommodate the city's request and provide shelter for 70 additional men.

Portland Rescue Mission's Burnside Shelter operates 365 days a year and 24 hours a day as a place of refuge for homeless men and women from cold and wet weather. Guests also receive hot meals.
