Volunteers are considered for roles according to need, availability, gifting, faith, gender and age. Our goal is to best match volunteers with the opportunities available and to meet needs of the guests and residents we serve. We ask individual volunteers to commit to a minimum of 1 year of service.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDIVIDUALS

OUTREACH

The Outreach Department at Portland Rescue Mission provides hospitality services for homeless guests, builds intentional relationships with them, and encourages them away from the destructive environment of the street and toward a life focused on relationship and hope.

Breakfast/Lunch Meal Service

Portland Rescue Mission serves breakfast to homeless guests every day at the Burnside Shelter. Lunch is served on Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers help by welcoming guests, serving food and helping clean and reset the dining room for the day’s activities. Volunteers serve once a week to once a month.

Reach Out Women’s Ministry

Reach Out is a new ministry of Portland Rescue Mission to care for and connect with women on the street. Volunteers serve women through giving hand massages, providing clothing and conversation in order to care for them physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Hospitality Ministry

Our hospitality ministry serves men and women who are currently homeless by sharing the love of Jesus with them in order give hope. Volunteers do this by meeting basic needs, answering phones, greeting guests and responding to inquiries.

RECOVERY

The New Life Recovery Program is a 12- to 18-month residential recovery ministry and includes spiritual formation, addictions counseling and life skills. Recovery is faith based in nature and therefore all volunteers must have a personal faith in Jesus, be a part of a local church community and be at least 3 years removed from an addiction.

Children

Volunteers support the staff in facilitating a safe and healthy environment for the kids at Shepherd’s Door.

Education

Many of the residents who enter our programs are in need of educational assistance. Volunteers help men and women accomplish their educational goals by providing teaching, tutoring and administrative support.

Life Skills

The men and women who enter our programs often have had little invested into them. Home life, self care, vocational skills and resident advocacy allow men and women to be successful when they complete the recovery program. Volunteers support residents in their life skills by serving alongside them, coaching and modeling a healthy life.

Mentoring

Mentors work one-on-one with residents in the New Life Ministry, building discipleship relationships with them to facilitate their growth and maturity in Christ. Mentors model a healthy life of faith, relationship and life skills. While mentoring isn’t for every volunteer, some volunteers will gain a good grasp of the recovery process and discover mentoring to be a great fit.

OPERATIONS

In order to feed, clothe and bring life change to thousands of homeless people it is vital that facilities are kept up and administrative processes are maintained.

Warehouse

Portland Rescue Mission receives donations of food and clothing that we use to serve our residents and guests, providing them with basic services and hope in difficult situations. Volunteers help sort and distribute donations.

Maintenance

Volunteers help create a safe, comfortable and healing environment at all Portland Rescue Mission facilities by helping with a range of facilities projects, from maintenance to improvement projects.

Administrative Support

Volunteers support Portland Rescue Mission by assisting with a variety of administrative and clerical work. Office volunteers work with various departments to support our work with community partners, donors, residents and other volunteers.
