Volunteer groups are considered for roles according to need, availability, gifting, faith, gender and age. Our goal is to best match volunteer groups with the opportunities available and to meet needs of the guests and residents we serve. We ask most volunteer groups to commit to a minimum of 1 year of service.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROUPS
Meal Service
Breakfast/Lunch for Homeless Guests
Portland Rescue Mission serves breakfast to homeless guests off the street every day at the Burnside Shelter. Lunch is served on Saturday and Sunday. Volunteer groups help by welcoming guests, serving food and helping clean and reset the dining room for the day’s activities. Volunteer groups serve once a week to once a month and typically have less than 5 people.
Evening Ministry to Homeless Guests
Portland Rescue Mission seeks to equip and engage local churches in serving homeless men and women. Evening Ministry is a great way for churches to begin that journey. Groups create an atmosphere of hospitality at the Burnside Shelter by serving the evening meal and providing a chapel service to 150–300 homeless guests. These groups minister to the physical and spiritual needs of the homeless men and women of Portland by providing a hot meal, conversation and a word of encouragement. Through these tangible expressions of love, volunteers communicate to each homeless person that he or she is known and valued.
Meal Hosting for Recovery Residents
Evening meal hosting is an opportunity for churches and groups to serve the New Life Recovery Program residents. Groups purchase, prepare, serve and share their meal with the residents. This act of service allows groups to practice hospitality, offer support and give hope to the men, women and children who are seeking life change.
Work Projects
Volunteer groups of all shapes and sizes serve Portland Rescue Mission facilities and help create a safe, comfortable and healing environment for residents and guests. Projects range from general maintenance to improvement projects.
