The project, spearheaded by the vision and passion of volunteer Ron Glanville, was no small undertaking. A wide variety of volunteers helped clear trees, level the ground, lay gravel, install water lines, and build the garden boxes.

The finished project was dedicated this week, celebrating the beauty and life it adds to the Shepherd’s Door outdoor environment.

Many homeless men and women feel ignored, invisible and unheard as people walk by them each day. Underheard in New York set out to help homeless residents in New York City speak for themselves. They provided Danny, Derrick, Albert and Carlos each with their own mobile phone, a month of unlimited text messaging and a Twitter account.

These men found their voices by texting their thoughts, feelings and actions to Twitter.

104.1 FM “The Fish” and Lloyd Center mall have partnered to collect new cosmetic and spa items such as nail polish, curling irons, bath robes, mineral bath salts, and other similar items. These items will be given to the moms and other women living at Shepherd’s Door, the women and children’s recovery ministry of Portland Rescue Mission.

To make your donation, stop by the customer service desk at Lloyd Center mall (2201 Lloyd Center, Portland, OR 97232). Donations will be accepted now through Saturday, May 5.

Ann, Danielle, Maria and Erin celebrate new life.

Four women recently graduated from the New Life Recovery ministry at Shepherd’s Door, our women and children’s recovery center in northeast Portland.

Over the last 12-18 months, Ann, Danielle, Erin and Maria have embraced the hard work of addiction recovery, life skills training, counseling and spiritual renewal. In the safe, healing environment of Shepherd’s Door, they’ve experienced healing of the root causes behind homelessness and addiction. Because of friends like you, Maria has been reunited with her two daughters.

During their annual cookie sale, the Scouts asked customers to donate $1.00 to help homeless men, women and children through Portland Rescue Mission. The girls then donated 109 boxes of delicious Girl Scout cookies to help with the hundreds of meals the Mission provides every day.

Lydia and her Girl Scout Troop chose to help homeless men, women and children through their cookie sales this year.

“We wanted to get the girls thinking about helping people who may not have as much,” says Troop Leader Mary Chilton. “We allowed them to choose a local charity on their own.”

“I’d used meth daily for eight years, starting when I was just 15,” Maria recalls. Mom was an alcoholic, dad was a “meth cook,” and Maria often sold drugs besides using them. “I didn’t trust anyone. In my world, everyone was out for themselves… what do you have for me today? Once I lost my baby girls, I was broken. I came to Shepherd’s Door (the women’s and children’s ministry of the Mission) desperate to get my children back.”

Today, Maria is a new woman, living with 10-year-old Miranda and 1-year-old Sadie and starting her family anew. “God gave me a second chance. Getting my children back is a miracle,” Maria says with a smile. “I’ve learned to trust people and trust God. Everyone sees that I’m happier, I have a glow, and I want more of Jesus in my life.”
